PERIODONTITIS
WHAT IS PERIODONTITIS?
–
Also known as periodontal disease, periodontitis is a serious gum infection that damages not only the soft tissue but also destroys the bone that supports the teeth. The disease can be absolutely painless and usually is diagnosed with these symptoms: swollen, red gums that bleed easily, bad breath, plaque around the teeth, loose teeth.
WHAT IS THE TREATMENT?
–
The main aim of the treatment is disinfection – removal of all the plaque (bacteria) and tartar from around the teeth above and under the gums. This treatment is always performed with anesthesia, because the plaque can be found deep under the gums and removal can be painful. Sometimes several sessions of disinfection are necessary, depending on the level of the disease. The treatment and regular periodontal maintenance after that has a very important role in saving your teeth, because lost bone structure never recovers. The only way to avoid teeth loss is to stop periodontal disease in time.
